Call the Premier or Deputy Premier

Making a call isn’t as hard as you think. Keep it brief and respectful. Phone calls hold the most weight as all calls are officially logged. Additionally, politicians track call volumes closely; if an office receives dozens of calls on a topic, they assume thousands of other community members feel the same way.

Refer to our Email action for some talking points.

I’m calling about the Montague Rd Precinct Provisional Land Use Plan that includes the publicly owned Visy site, publicly-owned Riverside Drive and publicly-owned Kurilpa Point Park.

This area has always been considered a future extension of the publicly-owned South Bank cultural district but there does not appear to be any consideration from the current State government to maintain the vision for a publicly-owned community legacy. This is shameful. Never will this opportunity arise again.

An estimated 50,000 additional people will call Kurilpa home over the next 20 years and the State government is proposing to take away the last opportunity for community infrastructure. This will be socially disastrous.

Over 3600 people have signed the petition to

  1. Keep the Visy site in public hands, and

  2. Deliver a publicly-owned South Bank 2.0 legacy project that serves current and future generations

I’d like this call to be recorded as a call for the government to maintain all publicly owned land in the Montague Rd Precinct.

If you have the opportunity, feel free to talk on these matters and/or something else that you feel passionately about.

  • Consultation and Transparency: This is a significant decision for the local community and all of Brisbane, yet no meaningful consultation has occurred.  Claims of ‘commercial in confidence’ have been used to hide decisions.

  • Special powers and risks of corruption: The State government has used Provisional Priority Development Area powers to override normal planning laws and block public appeal rights. Developers stand to make a lot of money from this.  These developers can now make donations to political parties.  Every approval by the State Government will come under intense scrutiny.

  • Greenspace for community needs: There currently is an urgent need for more parks which will become even greater with the massive surge in population.  The current proposal cuts promised public parkland.

  • Schools for new students: Current primary and secondary schools are at or over capacity.  Without more land and resources they will be overwhelmed with new students. The only option will be to cut the enrolment catchment and merit entry. And even then it won’t be enough.

  • Infrastructure that serves the people: Montague Rd is already over capacity with no dedicated bike lane or bus lane. Riverside Drive’s cycleway and walkway is used everyday by locals, commuters and tourists yet its about to be sold and no one can tell us what will happen to it. With the local population set to double, why is the State Government reluctant to deliver an active transport plan?
